Years ago I heard a story about a man who was found dead in his apartment. It was obvious to investigators that he lived alone and had no close relatives or friends. A search of the apartment revealed a very interesting discovery. Hundreds of thousands of dollars was found throughout the apartment. There was money in the drawers, in the closets, under the beds, in the cabinets and stuffed in shoe boxes stored in various locations throughout the house. The most interesting thing was that the autopsy found the cause of death to be starvation! How could this be? Something was missing.
Many of us, even those who profess to be religious or Christian, are living in the same condition (spiritually speaking)as was this man. Some of us, perhaps even you are doing well in our lives. You probably have a good job, decent house, nice car and lots of friends. According to the world’s standard, you’re doing pretty good for yourself. However, deep down inside you know that something is missing. Deep down inside there is a hunger that comes from a longing soul. You know it’s there, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. What is it that’s missing?
Every living person has a hunger in their soul that is so deep it is out of reach from anything in this world. You and I can seem to have it all together and look pretty good on the outside, but be dying of starvationon the inside. That hunger demands to be fed by something. However, until it is satisfied, starvation will continue to occur until it is swallowed up in death. What’s missing is a personal, intimate connection with your Creator.
Your Creator and mine says, “He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness” (Psalm 107:9). There was once a man that had everything he needed to fill his hunger, yet died of starvation. An empty jar cannot be filled unless the lid is removed. Remove the lid of your heart today and allow God to fill your hungry soul. He loves you more than you can know and will add to your life that “something” that is missing. Reach for Him today and lay hold of significance in your life. He always answers…I know…I’ve been there.
